After writing about Crassula 'Undulata' a thought began to rise from the depths. "there had been another wavy plant!" he muttered.
I found the photo. This was from my end of summer trip to the Puget Sound. My landscaper buddy Shane showed me this Salvia in a client's garden. He said it was a Salvia officinalis cultivar (common sage) but couldn't remember the name.
Can anyone help? Ruffled sage.... rippled, undulatus, wavy, no luck with Google... And where can I get one???

RHS Plantfinder lists 'Crispa' which doesn't look quite right in google images.....why don't you just bum some cuttings from your friend? (and share w/ me!)
ReplyDeleteIf only I knew the name of the cultivar and where I could get one I would share with you! Only I don't know who you are Anonymous!
ReplyDeleteLooks good! But are those big calyces correct for S. officinalis? Not easy to tell from the pic!
ReplyDeleteWell that's what I thought!!! But it did smell like your garden variety sage. John... if you don't know this one who in the world will??
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I can't provide an ID, but there's Robin Middleton's fantastic Salvia site that might provide an answer: http://www.robinssalvias.com/blue/default.htm
ReplyDeleteJames! Thanks for the help will take a look. Would love to see your garden sometime. Also wouldn't mind a slip of one of your salvias!
ReplyDeleteWhen you first posted, I emailed Robin Middleton to see if he knew, and he thought it might be an officinalis. I also emailed German Salvia buff Frank Fischer (now w/ Ewald Hugin, formerly w/ Hans Kramer at De Hessenhof) and he wrote back that "The Salvia in the blog should be Salvia pomifera. Native to Greece, mainly Crete. Quite hardy, but of course, reacts sensible to wet winter weather. Very very good drainage is a must! Maybe better in a terra pot?!
ReplyDeleteHope this helps.....
WOW! Thanks Anonymous! Who was that masked man? or woman? You are right it looks just like the images I've found for Salvia pomifera. Thanks again.
